Goal 1
Sustainable Pastoralism and Economic Development
Integrate pastoralism into national and regional economies while promoting sustainable livelihoods and economic resilience.
Our strategic goals
Everything IPDR does, with pastoralist communities in Turkana and across the region, contributes to these four goals.
Goal 1
Integrate pastoralism into national and regional economies while promoting sustainable livelihoods and economic resilience.
Goal 2
Promote sustainable rangeland management, climate resilience, smart agriculture, and responsible use of natural resources.
Goal 3
Strengthen cross-border peace, civic participation, land and legislative reforms, and the rule of law.
Goal 4
Improve access to essential services while promoting gender equality, youth empowerment, research, innovation, and social inclusion.
About Us
IPDR is a Turkana-based institute that works hand in hand with pastoralist communities. Together we improve animal health and welfare, protect livelihoods, generate evidence through research and help families prepare for drought and other shocks.
What drives us
To champion sustainable development among pastoralist communities through innovative research, advocacy, and integrated programs that address pastoralism-related challenges in Kenya and the Horn of Africa.
A transformed pastoralist society that thrives in harmony with its environment, resilient to challenges, and inclusive of diverse socio-economic opportunities.

Where we work
IPDR works with pastoralist communities in Kenya, South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia. Our main field base is in Turkana County, Kenya, with offices in Lodwar and Nakuru, and we reach herders and families in remote rangelands where services are hardest to access.
Our achievements
From technology that protects working animals to community-led peace, these are some of the results of our work.
1Punda Wangu AI System
The system gives donkey owners and veterinary doctors access to a library of knowledge, and lets them track missing donkeys using each animal's unique features.
2Emergency helpline
An emergency call centre, reached on the toll-free number 0800000890, where farmers can report cases of donkey theft, abuse and slaughter.
3Data for action
A dashboard that brings the donkey trade into focus: trade, slaughter and theft are tracked in one place, and hotspots are mapped so that action can be targeted where it is needed most.
4Peace and livelihoods
Community peace committees along the Turkana–West Pokot border are trained and equipped to be self-reliant, and are funded to run income-generating activities that keep peace sustainable.
